"Ex-cop turned freelance gumshoe Vinnie Altobelli survived a coronary, only to lose his heart to his devoted nurse. Now, a frantic phone message has Vinnie's ticker going ka-boom ka-boom with panic. Betty Wade, his angel of mercy, is inexplicably AWOL in Arizona - so Vinnie's mounting hiw own Desert Storm operation to liberate his would-be fiancee. But first, he's got to find her...

In the Southwest, the stifling climate isn't the only heat Vinnie encounters. Running interference against his inquiries is a full complement of G-men. It seems Vinnie isn't the only patient to fall for Betty Wade's bedside manner. Former CIA honcho - and current psycho - Kurt Reich wants to play doctor with Betty in the worst way. The fact that he's sitting on enough dirty laundry to hang the whole government out to dry has the Feds ready and willing to use Betty for bait.

Vinnie's got his own game plan - and an odd squad of players to help carry it out. Besides his fellow ex-fuzz, the mammoth Matt Brady, there's a pint-size nurse with pit-bull persistence. And there's Kurt Reich's jilted girlfriend, a woman scorned with enough fury to make hell look like Disneyland...not to mention her killer karate kick. But - be still, Vinnie's tender heart - is this crew any match for a government-issue maniac?"
