If it were not for the mini-series Band Of Brothers, William Guarnere and Edward Heffron would just be two random names of people writing a book. However, as an avid fan of the mini-series, I was incredibly interested in hearing about the war directly from their mouths without the filters that Hollywood provides.

Brothers In Battle, Best of Friends is the story of the experiences and friendship of Wild Bill Guarnere and Babe Heffron, two members of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division that fought in World War 2. The book is a chronological biography of the two men, with the beginning briefly touching on their childhoods, the bulk of the book covering their military experiences, and the end touching on their later years and the Band of Brothers series.

For a fan of the mini-series, a bulk of the book comes as no surprise. Most of the events from the war were accurately portrayed in the mini-series. However, in the book, the story is told through the eyes of two mischievous, street tough boys from the neighborhood and the book reflects that. The end of the book that talked about the two mens impression of the Band Of Brothers filming and their impressions of the mini-series were excellent and very insightful in my opinion.

As I read the book, my view of these two men changed. I had always viewed them as heroes because of their sacrifice during war to this great nation. However, after reading this book, I felt they were heroes for taking the time to tell their story. They told their story to educate so that all men of the war could be recognized, so that people do not forget the sacrifices made back home, to honor their friends who fell in battle, and so people would not forget.

Overall, this is an excellent book on the paratroopers of World War 2. If you are unfamiliar with the Band Of Brothers mini-series, this book is an excellent. Detailed account of what the war was like for members of the parachute infantry. If you are a Band Of Brothers fan, while this book is not a must read, it does provide many details that are not covered in the mini-series that kind of completed the story for me. Either way, I recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in World War 2 or the mend behind Band Of Brothers.
