Widowed Grace Millerton remembers and writes of the winter of 1920-21, when her sister Rose--who had eloped four years before--returned to their parents home unexpectedly. Strange sounds and glimpses of unidentified strangers in and about the brownstone trouble Grace and the family, until a discovery is made, and a murder occurs.

I read this short book in one sitting, and though I liked the depiction of era and atmosphere, there was no real tension to this gothic tale. The characters are lacklustre and forgettable, (although Grace makes an appearance in Rae's second book, Julia's Story.)

Brownstone Facade is the first of Catherine M. Rae's nine light gothic novels, and they do improve.
