quite simply, this is one of a very few books that every American should read; covers a period in history that every American should know about, and that few do.

This is a wonderful book for the middle school classroom. It pulls the students into the story and holds them there with plenty of historical action and tugging of the heart-strings.

I read this book many moons ago when I was in middle school and still remember it to this day. It truly affects the young reader with it's emotion and life and death struggle.

If you are looking for a book to share with your class than this is the one. The students are eager for the story to continue each and every day. Not only are they excited about listening to you read but they are jumping to take their turn at reading it. At times the vocabulary stumbles them but keep at it for the sake of the story.

There are several reproduced old photos of affected individuals in the middle of the book. I felt it was too sad to read.
