How do you pay with amazon gift card when you are not directly purchasing from amazon. how do you do it and how does it really work?

I buy an Amazon gift card and gift it to the person with the credits.  You need the email address to do it.  I DO buy the gift card directly from Amazon if that is what you are asking.
