Dr Crompton writes in an easy to read style. There are copious notes, indexes and quotes from original sources. Crompton always makes his point with evidence mined out of years of research. He often translates text that the powers that be, of the time and even of the modern world, judged not suitable for those not apt in ancient Greek, Latin and medieval Italian. He shows an England invested in appearances before all else. Hypocrisy and deceit allowed the wealthy to pay and to flee from torture and death as Byron did. Being confronted with public disclosure of same sex gratification was the 'scandal' the rich fled. Partners or victims not connected nor funded could not avoid dire punishments and social shunning for their behavior. This study shows many things mostly hid or out right denied. As always Crompton overturns every hidden place and is a delight to read.
