Cady Author:Lillian Eige Twelve-year-old Cady has been passed around from relative to relative for as long as he can remember. Finally, after Old Gran dies, he is sent off--secretively, in the dead of night--to Thea McVey, who is a stranger to Cady, but who seems to know a lot about him. Cady likes Thea and his new home, although the circumstances seem odd. He makes fri... more »ends with a ragtag group of lonely people: the old man who farms Thea's land, the old man's unwanted niece and nephew who are staying with him, and, more intriguing, a hermit-like man who lives in the woods with his fox. Cady feels drawn to the hermit, compelled to get to know him, even though the man is gruff and silent. As the months wear on, Cady finally feels that he belongs, that ""family"" does not have to mean ""related""; and the truth about Cady's past is gently revealed. Eige is to be commended for her finely crafted story. Her prose, lyrical and poetic, paints a vivid picture of the wild Minnesota country and of a boy who finds the courage to challenge and make friends with his past.« less
