This may be the first book that I read that I determined never, never to throw out. It may not be a classic like "GWTW" but I don't know why not! Kendra, Marny, Hiram and Pocket are characters I will never forget. The San Francisco setting is wonderfully drawn. A little like a romance, but really not a romance at all.

I have read this WONDERFUL book at least once a year for around 20 years!! Every time I read it, I got something more out of it. Gwen Bristow brings the Gold Rush period to life!

Excellent book about the early 49'rs in the California Gold Rush and about the lifes of those hardy and unhardy souls. some who sailed around the world to get there. A romance too, but very good historical information about early San Francisco. Well written, great characters and interesting lives.

This is a long time favorite. Fantastic characters- Marny, Pocket & Kendra. a view of the 49'ers from the other side of the coin. San Francisco before the gold rush.
