I'm a HUGE fan of Dick Francis, and I've met some other cool fans here on PBS. We were thinking it would be fun to put together a reading group, and work our way through his catalog. We're thinking of reading them through in order, so we can track his progress as an author ... so the first one would be Dead Cert (using DickFrancis.com for the publication order). So ... who all would like to join us on this horse-race through mystery history? New readers are always welcome to join at any time ....
Discussing: Field of Thirteen Discussion begins June 18 Reading Next: Second Wind Discussion begins July 23 Up Next: Shattered Discussion begins August 20

Count me in! I've been wanting to re-read the Dick Francis novels for quite a while now! :) |
Hi Jane! Welcome!
It'll be interesting to re-read his earlier ones again ... I read most of the later ones fairly often! |
Am I too late to join? I got busy yesterday and forgot! |
Not too late at all Ani ... Welcome to the track!! |
How many do we need to reach "critical mass" so to speak? |
I dunno ... I'll be reading them regardless ... we may have ourselves a very informal discussion group ... LOL |
I haven't read any of his books. This will be a good way to start! Please count me in. |
Hi Anna! Good to see you!! |
When are we starting? |
Well, I think we'd at least need to wait long enough for folks to order the first two books on the list from PBS. I already own all of the DF books, so this isn't an issue for me, but it could be for others... Anyway, I can start whenever. If there's just the 4 of us, we can wait until both Anna and Ani verify that they have the books. |
I'm with you Jane .. I have them all on my shelf, so I can go any time ... So it's up to you, Ani and Anna ... let us know when you're ready to roll!

I have never read any Dick Francis either, but have heard many good things about him. If it is not too late to join in, please count me in also. |
Come on in Karen!! We're happy to have you! |
YaY! I will let you know just as soon as I get Dead Cert. I am so excited. |
Which book will we be reading after Dead Cert? We should plan on being able to order the next while reading the current one. Just a thought! |
Next up after Dead Cert will be Nerve
Does Feb 6 sound reasonable for receiving Dead Cert? I'm on vacation the last of week of Feb, so we can begin discussion the first of March, unless you guys get your books early and we're ready sooner ... (This is my first reading group, so I appreciate your input when it comes to dates and such ...) |
I'm on vacation from Feb 16-20, so any time after that will be OK for discussion. I made an announcement of our group over in CMT. Not sure if we'll add anyone that way, but worth a try. :) |

Count me in! I LOVE Dick Francis and it would be fun to reread them in order with all of you. |
Welcome to the track Lita!! |
I read about it in CMT -- I love reading Dick Francis, but I posted almost all those books of his that I had. I wouldn't mind reading along from library books. Can someone publish a list in to-be-read order so I can make sure the library has them? I don't think I want to request books I've gotten rid of once :-) |
What is the plan for our reading group? To read one Dick Fancis book a month? Or more? Could you list the titles so I can start getting them? Thanks! I'm really looking forward to this! |

Hi Denise! Welcome!
using DickFrancis.com for the publication order:

Anna - Yes, we're looking at one a month ... we'll be going for years! :-D

Yup. That's 42 books, and probably 43 and 44 will be coming up while we read, LOL! It was The Danger that got me hooked. My favorites were Proof and Break-In. I think that Dead Heat is a great one, too! What I think will be funny is the antiquity of some of the technology in the earlier books. He started writing in the late '60's, IIRC, and I know that in one of them a cassette tape was a part of the plot! :D Last Edited on: 1/23/09 12:46 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |
