This is an excellent old style Gothic romance with the requisite brooding house on the edge of the fells and a mystery that has left the master of the house bitter and wounded. It has a lot of influence from Rebecca, but Hylton manages to be different in enough ways to keep the reader guessing.

I read it in one long sitting.
