I really looked forward to reading this book, and overall, I not only enjoyed it, but learned something about the Reconstruction era istory immediately following the American Civil War that I did not know before.

Although I liked the set up and the main characters (well-drawn, fairly complex and human), at first I thought that the town's people and the reactions from seemingly ALL of them appeared to be just a bit stereotypical. (Of course, if the attitudes displayed at first by the captain were true and the rules from the Freedman's Bureau were what they were, I don't blame the reaction of many of the town's citizens. Right goals, wrong way of doing things...Verity's way was much better. But, maybe that was the point.)

OK, I will get off my soap box now.

In the second half of the book, the characters seperated into their own unique personalities. So, I found myself even furthur drawn into the story.

After alot of action, the story drew to a satisfying conclusion, and I am not just talking about the romance. There was a good conclusion to the question of teaching.

I liked the fact that the story featured a strong, smart, gentle woman character who remained strong throughout the book.

The writing style was readable and fast-paced. The only complaint, and it is minor one, is that sometimes adjetives and metaphors were overused or maybe inexpertly used.

Overall, this was a great book and I would recommend it.
