I thought as victorian Gothic novels go, this one was delightful! I loved the characters, the author's attention to the quirks and oddities of some of them. Much research went into it; you can see in the architectural, clothing, food & etc. details. A lot of unusual red herrings in the beginning...
I was pleased to find it was a can't-put-downer as the story went on, and the end, though happy in the usual way, is unexpectedly sardonic ~ which I found to be a remarkable choice.
