My son was amused by my relationship with Thermal and he spelt it out in the kitchen as we made a pot of tea.
"You know, you spoil that cat."
"I don't."
"You do."
Nick had never seen me with a pet before and I tried to explain the relationship between a man and his cat.
"It isn't just a matter of letting it out at night and then chucking half a tin of Whiskas in a bowl when it comes back."
"I can see that."
"We're on the same wavelength - like the sheepdog and the shepherd on that television program One Man And His Dog. We are one man and his cat."
"In other words, he's got you where he wants you."
"Something like that."

Really, Deric didn't mean to steal the neighbor's kitten. After all, he'd always fancied himself more of a dog man. It's just that, when he saw the wet, shivering creature in the backyard next door, he felt a little sorry for it. But life would never be the same for Deric, and his wife, Aileen, now that they had Thermal, the scrappy, furry bundle of curiosity so named after the Refrigerator Incident, involving several hours behind closed fridge doors, a package of cold cuts, and...well, Thermal was well and truly dubbed The Cat Who Came in from the Cold.
