Historical romance with suspense elements.

When Roan Penny was 6 his mother died and his father told him he was not worth a penny and told him is new surname was Penny to remind him always of how worthless he was and then he gave Roan to a elderly widow. She was a former school teacher and she taught him many marvelous things along with the basics of reading and writing. She died when he was 12 and he started to wander trying to find a place to belong. A nun took him in and cared for his for another 4 years and added to his education. When he had to leave there he wandered around for many years until he found an old man named Moses who took him in. A group of hooded bandits rode onto Moses' property one night and told him to leave as he was a squatter. Even though Moses had a deed to the property, they shot him, wounded Roan and burned the cabin. Roan was then beaten, dragged behind a horse and then beaten some more with a promise that they would do more to him if he ever came back to their city.

Marley Rose McClain was going to town for supplies when she saw a pile of rags on the side of the road. As she got closer she realized that it was a man, more dead than alive, and she took him back to her family ranch and cared for him. Roan had seen the face of one of the bandits and he was hell bent on revenge. Duel, Marley's father and her mother Jessie convinced Roan that he was too weak to take care of himself never name hunt bandits. The McCains take in orphans, they currently have 12 including a set of newborn triplets, and raise them as their own. One of them, Matt, becomes Roan's best friend. Matt reminds Roan of himself at age 7 and he is more than willing to let Matt hang around with him.

Someone was stealing cattle (lots of them) from Duel and he has his ranch hands that soon include Roan trying to track them down. This is where the suspense starts. Who are the rustler(s)? Who took a shot at Marley and Roan? Why won't the local sheriff help Marley and Roan? Who is Will Gentry and why does he want to kill Roan, Duel and Jessie? Why does he want to kidnap Marley? Who is Rube and why does he have a group of teenagers doing criminal activities for him?

I really liked all the suspense in the book and was wrong on almost all my guesses of who was doing the bad things. It is a love story, also a puzzle and a story of compassion.
