Catherine Lee: The Alphabet Series and Other Works
Catherine Lee The Alphabet Series and Other Works Author:Carter Ratcliff, Faye Hirsch This handsome volume displays the work of Catherine Lee, who creates in a variety of media, preferring to work in 'anything that has been in a liquid state - clay, concrete, fiberglass, all sorts of metal'. Featured here are the "Alphabets", so-called because they are made in order. They constitute three series, the third still in progress. The ... more »works in this volume are drawn from the second series, made from 1991 to 1995 and linked to places Lee has been. "The Alphabets" are shaped pieces comprising two or more parts. Most are made of cast bronze, some of iron, ancient materials with ancient associations with places with long, sometimes mystical histories. As shaped abstractions these objects are concrete and very specific, expressing their own, formal ties to the past, to Minimalism, and to modernism in general. Her work embraces the open-ended relationship to art history, representation, artistic intent, and subjectivity that have liberated art in our era.« less
