I like photography books with essays to go with the pictures.

This one is odd in that the "essays" were written by the women who nominated their cats (and themselves) to be featured in the book. The photographs are overall very nice. The essays vary--some are delightful and sweet, some irritate me (such as the one from the child who had a cat pregnant twice then run over then got another one--good grief, teach the kid some responsible pet ownership!)

It's an uneven book, which is not unexpected given the writing was not done by a professional. Some of them this was fine, others not so much. I think I prefer those with professional writer as well as a professional photographer. They have a better chance of conveying something that draws the photograph into life and brings a connection to the work.

I enjoyed it overall, but it didn't really draw me in or cause me to linger. It was a nice shallow read with pretty pictures and some nice caption-type essays. I still wish they'd taken the writing one step further (or been more discerning in those selected).
