Though the actual month of Hugh Millers birth was October, it was judged best. for the purposes of the Commemoration to select a date in August. The days proceedings abundantly justified the Committee, and bore testimony to the place our townsman occupies in the affectionate admiration of his countrymen, The crowds assembled at Crornarty were gathered from many lands, and drawn from idely differing social ranks. Naturally enough the newspaper press took a lively interest in the event, and it has been thought well to include in this volume a selection from the leaders of representative journals. Besides the Celebration the Committee has from the first kept in view the erection of a Library and Institute to bear the name of Hugh Miller a scheme which is Iikely soon to be realized through the munificence of Dr. Andrew Carnegie....« less
