This was an interesting story, but I didn't love it. I wanted to keep reading to figure out the mystery but I didn't really like many of the characters. A couple of the plot lines just die out which was a little annoying. Not a bad book though.

Another excellent book from Haynes. She made the character's pain seem so real. The characters also worked very well together in bringing out each others weaknesses and strong points.

A compelling Southern gothic. Wonderful writing, but difficult to follow. Her "Mother of Pearl" was much better, in my opinion.

FROM BACK COVER... FROM THE ACCLAIMED AUTHOUR OF MOTHER OF PEARL COMES THE STORY OF CHALKTOWN, AN EERILY QUIET VILLAGE IN GEORGE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, WHERE FOLKS COMMUNICATE WITH ONE ANOTHER SOLEY THROUGH CHALKBOARDS HANGING FROM THEIR FRONT PORCHES. SIXTEEN YEAR OLD HEZEKIA SHEEHAND LIVES DOWN THE ROAD WITH HIS RECKLESS SISTER, ARENA, HIS MENTALLY DISABLED YONGER BROTHER, YELLABABY, AND THEIR OFTEN CRUEL MOTHER, SUSAN-BLAIR, WHOSE HUSBAND HAS ABANDONED THE FAMILY. THE MYSTERY OF CHALKTOWN CALLS TO HEZ, AND ONE DAY HE SETS OUT WITH YELLABABY STRAPPED TO HIS BACK, DETERMINED TO DIVINE THE KEY TO THE CHALK. MEANWHILE, HIS FAMILY CONFRONTHS A TRAGEDY THAT JUST MIGHT PAVE AN UNEXPECTED TEAD TOWARD A HOPEFUL FUTURE. I DID ENJOY THIS BOOK.
