I have a question about mailing a book that I can't find addressed in the Help Sections and was directed to this forum by one of the VERY HELPFUL tourguides, Kim. Hope someone out there can help me so I can get the book out .. A member requested a book and I have printed the label with postage and DC - however, since then the member asked that I send the book directly to her son at another address since she was requesting it for him (another state, too). My question, is it okay for me just to stick a label with the son's address over the member's address (only covering the address itself) and send it on like that or will that mess up some secret code imbeded in the postal label or something? HELP PLEASE! Thanks so much for your time and attention! ~ Libbi Belt |

I would take it into the post office and explain the situation if possible. If you put a label on it, it will appear to be forwarded and may generate a postage due when it is delivered. |

They may also be concerned that the package was weighed and the postage paid for a different address, and the new address may cost more. There was also concern that nothing would stop a person from printing multiple labels (for which they would only pay for the first one), and thus getting free postage for the other copies of the label they used. And for the record, asking here was Diane G.'s idea - she's so smart! :)
Phooey on being stuck with printed postage |

Since media mail is the same cost no matter where it's sent, I don't think it'd be a problem. BUT - that's just my opinion on it - I don't really know for sure. |

Yep, the cost is the same, media mail is based on weight only. Media mail pays for a one way trip to an address. If it is forwarded or returned, the postage is charged for the trip to the next place. An exception is made when you move within the same zipcode. If the OP writes or tapes another address on the package, it appears that the package is being forwarded. A postal worker down the line would have no idea that it was never sent anywhere else. If the package was marked by the sender's post office as postage verified, it is more likely the change would be allowed. Most sites that can print postage allow for a refund on unused labels. The sender's post office may say that it can not be used and a refund should be requested assuming a refund is available. It would be a judgement call at the local level to allow a change in the label without charging additional postage. |
