So I was wondering what you all thought about having a character in a post-apocalyptic story named Neo. The story is about a girl who is searching for her brother after the zombie apocalypse, and has nothing to do with the Matrix, or with computers. I wouldn't even be considering this, but the name is perfect for this particular character.

Also, does anyone have any thoughts on naming characters in general? I usually just hunt through random name generators and baby name books until I find something that looks right, if I don't have a name in mind already.

I use baby books as well. But when trying to come up with a unique name, I try combining two names together or changing one letter of a name.

Marissa- just go with what you feel the character is called. Most names have already been used in a book in some form already.  Making names weird or strangely spelt can cause people to have issues reading them as they cannot sound it in their head.

I use online baby naming sites or just names that I can see around me. If you are basing a story in another country then try to use names that are 'native' or common in that area.    Nothing is worse then reading and finding a name that is very much part of one culture and stuck on someone really not even close to it.
Like alot of the Ladasha, LaKeesha type names that many people use for their AA kids, thats very american and when reading a story set in New zealand it really made me wonder where the kid was really from.  Name was LaKendra.

When I come up with a name-right now that comes first.  Like for the novel I am working on which is a mystery/suspense/thriller my main character's last name is Michaels.  Back in my husband's days as announcer we knew someone with that last name.  The first name is all my idea though.  There a lot of resources though if you need help.  www.writersdigest.com is a great place to start.
