I just discovered that Charles Todd has a new series coming out in January of next year. The book is titled "A Duty to the Dead" and it sounds like the main character is a nurse in a British hospital during or just after WWI. The book is already in the system here. |

LeeAnne, I haven't read anything by him yet. But, I did stumble upon this book and had put it on my reminder list. Wasn't ready to commit to wishlisting until I knew what he was about. What are his books usually like? The paperback in PBS is stating a 9/1/2009 publication date. Susan Last Edited on: 8/8/09 9:55 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

Hey Susan, I didn't learn about Inspector Ian Rutledge until I started coming to PBS and I believe it was our own sweet Lester who first made the recommendation to me. I love these books. They are very much in the "classic mystery" genre with a kind and tortured soul to lead the reader through the maze. Rutledge is back on the job at Scotland Yard after recovering from the traumas of the trenches of WWI. He is also haunted by the voice of a Scottish soldier who resides in his head. I don't want to give too much of that away but I think Charles Todd (a mother/son writing team) does a great job with an element that could be taken as a bit gimmicky. If I were you, I'd definitely read the books in order. I'm only through the first five because I want to make the series last! Hope that helps! |

Oh, and you're right. The new book is due at the end of this month, not the beginning of the new year! Thanks for pointing that out! |

I LOVE Charles Todd, and I'm already on the wishlist for Duty to the Dead (I'm 7 of 12). His Ian Rutledge character is great. Thanks for posting this, even though I knew about this book, I might not know about the next one people post about, and I love the sharing of information. |

I have an ARC of A Duty to the Dead which I need to read and review, but I haven't read his other series--although I did try the first one a few years ago and I think "weeded it out" after reading a couple chapters. I kept it on my RL tho and intended to try it again some day. I'm wondering what sort of comparison this series will have to Maisie Dobbs series, although Maisie is no longer a nurse...we shall see I guess! Cheryl |

Well, I am so glad to hear the praise for the Ian Rutledge series. Would you believe that I have the whole series and haven't read ONE of those books yet? I have been so busy doing reading challenges, moving and trying to read books that are wishlisted (so I can send them off) that I haven't even gotten to these books. They sounded very intriguing to me, so after about a year, I've collected them all - and now you are telling me that HE IS STARTING ANOTHER SERIES!!!! EEGADS, what am I to do!!!? |

I have Janes, Benn and lately Charles Todd, WWI; also Alan Furst. My problem is that I have just about run out of authors to read and I would like to stay in that era. Any suggestions? Charlie, Carol's husband and gofer |
