So I just read and was not impressed with The man who folded himself but David Gerrold.  I was looking for something else to read and I picked up Chess with a Dragon from a pile in the back of the shelf.  I looked at the author and sigh -it's david Gerrold.   Has annyone read this book?  Is it worthwhile?  He (gerrold) did write the star trek episode -trouble with tribbles so he does have that going for him.  I just don't want to read another book with a main character that has no empathy sympathy compassion ambition intelligence or really any redeeming characteristics (oh and there's really no other characters in the book for balance)

My husband also like the Trouble with Tribbles so I asked him being he reads about a book a day and he said the only other ones by Gerrold that he really enjoyed was the ones in the War Against the Chtorr Series: A Matter for Men, A Day for Damnation, A Rage for Revenge, and a Season for Slaughter.

Hope that Helps:)

Take Care,

Lisa

I like Gerrold and yes I've read Chess with a Dragon.  It wasn't all that memorable - about how the human could possibly measure up to the dragon (alien) in the grand galactic civilization.  In the Campbell tradition, humans manage to do all right, if not give the aliens something to worry about.  I think I probably gave the book 4 stars.  I enjoyed Jumping Off the Planet and Bouncing Off the Moon by this author, although on the juvenile side, still, interesting.  There is a third book to this series, haven't read it (yet).

Thanks for the comments all!  I shelved it for now but I plan to read it.  It sounds more readable than my previous experience with him.  I started homecoming (omnibus 1st 3 novels) by card instead
