I just finished a fantastic mystery thriller that I couldn't put down- Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith.  It's about a serial killer loose in Stalinist Russia, who kills at least 44 children all over the country, but was never investigated because the state refused to acknowledge that the crimes were being committed until one demoted officer ends up pursuing the case at the risk of his own life.  Very fresh and original mystery, although some parts might be a bit too much for the squeamish.

I've also seen that there's a sequel, The Secret Speech, and was wondering if anyone had read it?  The reviews aren't good and its rated only 1 star here at PBS, but the first was so good I'm going to try it anyway.

I really enjoyed this book.  I have not read the second one, please let me know what you think about the second book.

I read Child 44 a few weeks ago and I agree that it was a great read. The serial killer mystery was certainly dark, but the depiction of life in Stalinist Russia was what gave the book its real chill, I thought.
