This is the second book by Dan Simmons that I have read that offers an alternate view of what we call ‘vampires’. As in his other book that I read ‘Carrion Comfort’, this offers a different twist on or view of what vampires are.

I enjoyed this book and really thought that the twist was unique. There were parts that were a little heavy with medical lingo and the ending was a bit dramatic, but still a good read.

I love how Dan Simmons researches his books. He adds a lot of truth as he tells the tale of VLAd the impalers real life in flashbacks as he tells the tale of our heroine attempting to adopt a baby in the horror of post revolution Romania in the 1990's. No love story between the vampires and the humans here. They are evil just like I like em, the walking dead parasites that they should be and our heros are determined to rid the earth of them!

This is a different kind of vampire novel. I really enjoyed how it unfolded. I had guessed some things and I was totally surprised by other events. Worth the read!

A well-paced book with lots of twists in the plot and a well thought perspective on the notion of vampirism. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Basic premise is that there REALLY are such things as vampires. Medical facts and procedures are presented to back the premise. Scary!
