Things have been a bit "surreal" here (in Ohio) these last several days----the local Mexican restaurants are taking out newspaper ads enthusiastically telling of special menus, music, events, etc. for Cinco de mayo, and one day (at least) an ad appeared on the very same page as the news article about Arizona's decision to get tough on "illegales" (from Mexico, mainly). And I got to thinking, what is so special about May 5 to all the Anglos who will probably gobble corn, beans, and rice and swill Dos Equis or Coronas in a few days? Do they even know it goes back to 1862, when the French (bent on setting up a monarchy in Mexico) were advancing on Mexico City, and assaulted Puebla on the way. They were repulsed with great slaughter there. (Not that that was the end of their imperial designs in Mexico, but that's another story . . .)
It just has gotten to be one weird and wonderful country, when everyone and his brother is Irish for a day on March 17, and Chinese-Americans gaily share their Chinese New Year's with all us "white devils", and everyone who likes bier und wurst cheerily hoists a stein at Oktoberfest. Don'tcha think?
