A writer who has abandoned his more serious work in favor of writing mysteries becomes involved in the strangest mystery he has read, written or thought about writing. He begins receiving phone calls from someone looking for Paul Auster, private investigator. Finally, he decides to assume that identity. With it he is asked to protect Peter Stillman, son of the elder Peter Stillman. The son believes that his father intends to murder him. Will Auster (Quinn) protect him from his father? Quinn as Auster takes on the job and the story spins out from that point. What happens to the Stillmans and Quinn the reader needs to discover for oneself.
