This book is an excellent companion to James McPherson's "For Cause And Comrades: Why Men Fought In The Civil War," in that you receive additional information from the soldiers themselves as to why they fought, how they viewed their enemy and the civilians on their side and the opposing side. What drove them to risk their lives? How did they view their leaders and how and when did they begin to lose faith in the men who lead them and the cause they joined to defend, or if they stayed faithful.

Reading at least one of these two books is necessary for an understanding of the Civil War soldier of 1861-1865.
