Summary: Charlie Muffin is back in England after the murder attempt in Berlin (by his own intelligence org spurring an international embarrassment); though some thought killing Charlie Muffin would be easy, now the ex-spy has vanished. After months on the run (with international killers after him), dulling his instincts with alcohol & laziness, the strain of life in the shadows has gotten to Charlie who thinks that by now the heat back home (=his ex-bosses thirst for revenge) must have died down so he shouldnt have any trouble sneaking across the Channel (from Switzerland where hes been living with his loyal wife Edith) to retrieve his stash of cashbut Charlie is dead wrong. His odious intelligence bosses (already onto his plan) plan to kill him after covering their tracks by burgling his safe deposit box & committing some other crimes.

Reviews: I agreed (with Kirkus) that the plot heats up well as Charlie (in his usual tricky way) survives again and wreaks his revenge and (with Oxford Mail) that Freemantle is as among the most excititing spy thriller writers (though I find this Charlie Muffin series a whole lot more fun).
