I'm still pretty new here, and I wanted some feedback on an issue I'm a little confused on. I've been blessed to find a neat used bookstore in town, with a nice selection and reasonable prices. However, they price the books by writing the price and a 5 digit inventory number in light pencil on the upper right corner of the first inside page - the page facing the front cover. The posting guidelines say that writing on the flyleaf is permissible. Trying to do the right thing, I checked several web definitions, and they seem to say the flyleaf is the blank page in the front and/or back of the book.. Most of these books are not blank on this front page - there may be advertising blurbs, or the title, but usually any blank page is further in. Since the posting guidelines also indicate there can not be writing on text pages, and even marketing blurbs are "text," I'm now getting myself confused.

Do you know if the writing I've described is acceptable under posting guidelines? I do realize I could try to erase, but I always seem to do more damage if I try to erase pages. If this is acceptable under PBS rules, I'd rather send the books as is than risk damaging the book (I'm a thorough klutz!).

Thanks for any help on this!

The used book store by me does the same thing. I've received a lot of books marked like this and I've sent a bunch out marked like this. I think it's ok. If not someone here will correct me angle, I've never gotten a complaint about it and I have no problems receiving books like this.

I'm pretty sure the help docs clarify this...writing on the flyleaf/title page is OK, whether it be a price or inscription or whatever.  It's writing or highlighting in the margins of the text that's prohibited.

Matt is correct!  Writing done on the flyleaf or title page is okay.  From the HC:

Pages:

  • No torn or chewed/gnawed pages
    • yes, that does say "chewed/gnawed".  That means no pet-chewed (or human-chewed) books.
  • No loose or missing text pages
    • for travel guide books - maps if designed to be detachable may be detached, but must be included.
  • Cover not water damaged (there may be no water damage to any part of the book)
  • No writing or highlighting or underlining on text pages
    • a signature or note on the flyleaf or inside front or back cover is OKAY
    • an author's signature on the title page is OKAY

That all sounds good. My new favorite bookstore may be a good source for wishlisted items, so I'll go ahead and post away.

Thank you!!
