Be aware that many editions of The Cloister and the Hearth have been abridged and often rewritten. This edition from The Book League of America, New York is one such - it is substantially abridged (down from 700 plus pages to 331) and rephrased to more modern English prose. The title page calls it "Designed to be read as a modern novel". The plot is there but the style and substance is gone.
