This YA book won the Smarties Book Prize silver award and also the Branford Boase Award for outstanding first novel for young people. The Horn Book gave it a starred review, too.
I don't always agree with the judges who award literary prizes, but this time I'm totally surprised that this little novel hasn't swept the board. It's that good!
A few comments from the back cover:
His tribe wanted to kill him. There was only one place to hide. Tom had never been to the city before, and it smelled of death. He stood and shivered by the bridge over the river, his skin prickling with danger. It was madness to cross--but then he was in danger if he stayed, too....
Sometimes it is not enough to be invisible. Sometimes home is the place you need to get away from the most. When Tom flees from his tribe, he has no idea what he is about to discover--a whole new world and a set of secrets that will change his life.
