A longtine fan of Inspector Morse, I just spied books by Colin Dexter. So, dear friends, how to you rate the actual booksby Colin Dexter: I can't see how any criticism would be called "spoiler", but I would like to know what you regard both strengths and weaknesses. I read his first book about 5 years ago. I couldn't really get into them. Unfortunately I bought a bunch of them at that time used books store, that have sat on myself for quite a while. A couple of my friends at work love his books though, and the PBS tV show.

I read most of the Colin Dexter books in the 80s and into the 90s and I loved them. I also loved John Thaw as Morse on the BBC series. I might have to revisit Morse... |

Haven't seen the tv series, but I've enjoyed the books. Of course, and as a somewhat broad generalization, the British books are a little more staid with less violence a/k/a action (barring James Bond, lol) and more mental processes. I like that. |

Something I've always wanted to know - are there clues in the selection of the music? Always when reading or watching the series I've wished I knew more about it. |

I read the books before the TV series (or most of them anyway), and I personally really liked them--but John Thaw and Kevin Whately bring Morse and Lewis to life in the series. So often the movie or TV version just doesn't live up to what you had conjured in your head from the books, but those portrayals are spot on, IMO. I just completed a re-read of the series last year and really enjoyed it! JM, I don't know about clues, but in the books it does tell sometimes what opera Morse is listening to, I think they just put that in the TV episodes.
