WHOM we cull in EngJilh Jlrward, in Litine is called fenefchallus, the ctimology whereof in bocth tongues is but conjeclurall, yet bocth cenainely are deduced out of the old German tongue, which is the efpeciall matrix of languages in this part of the world. Senefjjalhis is dcriued by fome ridiculoufly from the Latine word Senex, and the German fchalc, which fignifyeth a mlnifter, as though it mould import an auncient feniitour; by others from ge-Jind-fchnk, as theferuitonrof the family. Steward is fuppofed to be compofed of two Englifli Saxon words fled orjlith, z place, and ivard, as if it (hould lignify the gnardian and conferuer of the place. The word fenefchallus I haue not found more auncient then in /egilrits Alamannorum, titulo xii. and the word Reward I haue not reade in the Saxon age, but hus-gzriffln like fenfe ; yet the neceffity of the function aflureth vs they had the office in vfe, and Efgarus, who was by dignity JJatlher to Edward the Confelfour, amongft the teftes in a charter made by the fayd king to Valtham Abbey, is ftiled rigi procurator aulu, which fcemeth to allude to the office of a fteward ; and the French antiquaryes confent in this, that after Pepin came to the crowne he abolilhed the maires du palais, and fubftituted in their roome the fene- fchalls, to heare caufes and differences ...« less
