Set in post Civil War Alabama this story tells the struggle of the people both white and the freed slaves to come to grips with the new reality of their world.
Savannah's home burned to the ground and the land has been sold to Dante for back taxes. Not a popular option for anyone who is not from the area.
Dante proposes a compromise to Savannah that benefits both of them and she agrees even when the community and a family friend try very hard to turn Savannah against Dante because he purchased what was suppose to be her home - forever.
I became very engaged with the characters and wanted to find out the resolution of the problems that plagued their lives.
An excellent quick read.
