One of the most powerful, memorable books Pilcher has ever written. You watch young Judith grow up from an awkward girl to a determined, strong woman. You see her truly come into her own, all through the back-drop of WWII, and all while her entire family is missing for years at a time. You appreciate the struggles Judith goes through to maintain a semblance of normalcy in life and you appreciate more the human kindness shown to her by the Carey-Lewises, whom you grown to love almost as much as she does. Warning: You will probably experience some separation anxiety when this book ends. I know I did.

As with The Shell Seekers, I could not put this book down. Rosamunde Pilcher is one of my most favorite authors and her books are so beautifully written, you just get lost in the story. If you are going to start with any of her books, this one I highly recommend!

Well written, interesting and a pleasure to read. This is one of several of her books that I've read and enjoyed them all.
