As a doctoral student, I don't have nearly as much time for pleasure reading as I used to. This means that my to be read pile is stacked super high for the 2-3 hours a month of time that I get for pleasure reading during the school year. When I had a free night due to a cancelled class, I grabbed The Concrete Pearl instead of one of my textbooks. I curled up on the sofa and read. It took me about 2 hours to finish reading the book. These are my observations:
1. Short book, great pace
2. No characters are all that likeable. The heroine is portrayed as a rather incompetent person to begin with, and she makes several mistakes through the book. It is almost a make a mistake, clean it up type thing.
3. I was expecting to have to guess parts of the mystery, but it seemed obvious what was going on the further you read. I didn't feel the need to keep track of things to make predictions. There wasn't anything that particularly surprised me.
4. It is an enjoyable read. I feel like I'm pointing out negative aspects of the book, but I read it in one sitting, so I obviously couldn't put the book down. I tend to read mysteries as if they are going to be movies or television shows, and this would relate to about an hour long television drama on a cable channel. There are parts that are not suitable for younger viewers.
