Having lived in Japan, this book opened my eyes to how life really is in this wonderful country. I could not put this book down.

This is an incisive and engrossing description of Confucian values and the drive for social cohesion in Japan. The author, a correspondent for the Washington Post, would have you believe that his observations about Japan apply to all of Asia. However, I lived in China for a year and do not feel his points apply to today's mainland China very much, if at all. Nevertheless, it's a great read if you're interested in Japan.
