I enjoy certain authors and often search by an author's name for a book.  This might turn up a few versions of the same book, even a few different paperbacks (my preferred version).

But let's say I put this book on my wish list

http://www.paperbackswap.com/Prayer-Damned-Sister-Peter-Tremayne/book/075532837X/

A few months later another version with a different ISBN is published but I don't know it.  How could I (without endless searching and trying to keep up) find out that this is available

http://www.paperbackswap.com/Prayer-Damned-Sister-Peter-Tremayne/book/0312377894/

I personnally would read either version of the book.  Neither is abridged. Both are paperback. Neither is large print but they are shaped differently.  One is about 4" by 7" and thicker the other is about 5.5" by 8.25".

I would  not necessarily want to put both books on my wish list as I only want one but I don't care which.

Is there a way to link 2 different versions of the same book?

The best thing to do is simply to add all the relevant versions to your WL. Just remove the others when you receive one (the system mostly does this for you!). Also, you can see on your WL that there is a button marked "expand wish". If you click on that, you can see most other versions. I also sometimes find stray posted versions of WL books by searching on a title.

Sometimes, if I want to free space up on my wish list, I check to see if a particular version is the clear winner and delete the ones that are never going to be posted.

I guess I was trying to avoid having to come back and know if or find out a new version was available, constantly checking my wish list.  Computers are much better at keeping track of that stuff than humans.

Anyway I just tried the "expand wish" and they are not on each other's expansion. The hardback is.  I would think another paperback is more similar than a hardback.

It depends whether it's connected via the database. Unforturately, it depends on the source. Computers will work in this instance if there is a clear link, but if one is released overseas, or by a different press, the robot might not be able to parse the similarities. If you want every single version, or a very particular one, you are going to have to micro-manage it yourself.

If you notice (as you did) that two versions of the same book are not linked, in the past you could submit the information (and the ISBNs) to PBS using the Contact Us button and they would link them in the system.  Although lately they haven't been linking the versions I'm sending them so I'm not sure if they do that anymore.

You might be able to get them linked by editing the book data so it matches.  You can submit data edits under the more options tab on the book page. If the author's name is slightly different like say a middle initial on one version and none on the other or the series info being typed in slightly different or missing on one but on the other.

If all the editions are WL and you don't care which version you get, you have to get in line for them all if you want a shot at them all the versions.  Because some people only want certain versions, the WL lines for editions can be different. You might be the only wisher on one version but 1 of 20 on another version.

PBS is pretty good about automating a lot of stuff for its members but you still need to monitor things yourself like looking for the unlinked editions.

I don't know if everyone's account is this way or if it is just Gold Key members, but my Wish list has an expand wish feature. It is on the far right. the button tells you how many (if any) other versions of the book exist.

Under settings there is a box to uncheck if you want to be notified that a different version of your wl book was posted and available. Is that what you mean?

if you uncheck it, you get A LOT of email notifications. That is the only way I know that the diff isbn's would be linked, if you did not want to wl all the diff isbn's.
