The Conservationist Author:Nadine Gordimer Mehring is rich. He has all the privileges and possessions that South Africa has to offer, but his possessions refuse to remain objects. His wife, son, and mistress leave him; his foreman and workers become increasingly indifferent to his stewardship; even the land rises up, as drought, then flood, destroy his farm.

The protagonist, at the beginning, is referred to merely as he. Eventually he gets a name. He is a businessman, but also owns a large farm that is managed for him by a tenant farmer. I got half-way through before I bogged down and threw in the towel. To me it became rambling, disconnected, and downright boring. I leave this one for the critics, die-hards, and pedants.
