the book is out of date, but still good to read. The basic "truths" of what the author says are still the same. I liked it, it is worth your credit. Quick read.

Every woman should buy herself a copy of this book. I am not joking. I not only have this book (wish I could post a picture of the CONDITION it is in... couldn't even swap it here, it is that bad, LOL) but I also have a subscription to Paula's website. If you buy the book you get 50% a ONE YEAR subscription to www.beautypedia.com!! It is very cheap! The usual price is $25 annually, but if you bought the book you get 50%. This has saved me so much money in wasted cosmetic purchases.

*****For those of you that have not use Paula Begoun's skincare line... OMG! You are missing out. I don't even know how she charges so little for the products!! I even have my husband using 2 of her products! He uses sunscreen every morning and an alcohol-free toner as his aftershave! Most women (and men!) have no idea what damage and harm they are doing to their skin until it is too late. I am just lucky to be in my early 20's and have discovered all of these great skincare tips (mainly SPF 15+, UVA/UVB protection everyday no matter what, rain or shine on your neck, chest and HANDS for sure...).
Ladies go to Paula's site and look at her skincare products. http://www.cosmeticscop.com/

"Paula Begoun does her utmost to debunk the myths that the beauty industry spends millions to create. Looking beautiful doesn't have to cost a fortune." In this book you will find out if specific products live up to their claims and which ones are a waste of your hard earned money.

Let's face it: so many new cosmetics come out all the time, and other get discontinued, that it's going to be hard to keep a book like this up-to-date. But plenty of brands she talks about are still popular, and I feel like as someone who isn't a representative of one of the companies, she reviews them honestly and kind of gives you the low-down on how the products are marketed and which ones are worth the extra money to spend to get the high-quality stuff. I feel like it's less biased than a certain magazine that - though I enjoy it - makes a big deal every year about it's "reader recommendations," but the fact that most of the products are advertised in the magazine can't help but make you think the thing is biased.

I have this book on my bookshelf because as helpful as it is, it's not like a good novel you want to reread again; you're grateful for the advice, but you don't nec. need to keep it around. That all being said, I think it's very worthwhile. :)

If you're a makeup junkie (or reformed makeup junkie like myself) this is a must read. The author has included an extensive collection of candid makeup/skincare reviews that can save you a bunch of $ and has a detailed chapter about skincare routines. She'll help you weed out the unnecessary and overpriced!

Great resource and eye-opener when going to the cosmetic counter or drug store. The more expensive the brand is not always the best.

Interesting and helpful comments from an industry insider about beauty products. This is the 2nd Edition, 1994.

It's good to have a recent copy of this book to keep you away from the hype of expensive cosmetics. Once you find out a product is half as expensive and twice as good, you won't feel like a poor relation when you buy your cosmetics at the drug store and sometimes the dimestore!

Although this book has since been updated, the information in it is still valuable. Most of the product lines remain unchanged and the ratings are relevant to today's lines.

This book is a bit out of date; I'm not sure that some of the companies listed are still in business! But there's still good info to be had.

Book Description
Paula Begoun's mission is to educate women on the facts that the $45 billion cosmetics industry doesn't want people to know. In her makeup and skincare bible, she deciphers ingredient lists, translates cosmetics-counter beauty babble, and evaluates the worth of virtually every product on the market. This completely revised and expanded edition includes more than 75 new product lines. "Her straight talk about what cosmetics can and can't do has penetrated the blare of magazine and advertising hype." - San Francisco Chronicle; "Paula is nationally recognized as an authority on the subject of cosmetics. . . . She takes the cosmetics companies to task." - Miami Herald.
