Georgette Heyer is at the top of my favorite historical novelists list. She writes with regency comedies with wit, considerable knowledge of the times she writes about, excellently drawn characters, and ingenious plots. Among my favorite works by this favorite author is Cotillion. Much of this is due to the protagonist, Freddy Standen, fool of his family. Through the course of the story this humble viscount grows in stature and wins the love of his lady, who has her own growing up to do.

The secondary characters are also beautifully drawn, among whom Freddys father is especially delightful.
