The Country Life Book of Dogs Author:S. M. Lampson This is a most unusual book that should interest everybody who owns, breeds or shows dogs of any kind. It is the combined work of expert author and talented artist. Miss S. M. Lampson, the author, is a regular contributor of articles on dogs to Country Life and other papers, and has owned, bred and shown dogs all her life. Mrs. Bridget Oleren... more »shaw is a young artist who has made a special study of dogs and whose fine technique is admirably shown in the portrait of the Golden Retriever that graces the jacket of this book.
On each left-hand page of the book Miss Lampson gives the history and characteristics of over ninety breeds of dog, all of which appear on the Kennel Club Register. These are divided into the five official groups under the headings of Hounds, Gundogs, Terriers, Toys and Non-sporting breeds. Although necessarily quite brief, each account is full of interest and out-of-the-way facts. Facing these histories, on the right-hand pages, are brilliant sketches by Mrs. Olerenshaw of the breed, giving in each case a head of the dog and two or three impressions of an individual in typical attitudes. Underneath the drawings are brief despcritions of the appearance of the breed, printed by permission of Cruft's Show Committee.« less
