In 1905, a proper New England lady and a stubborn pioneer man fall in love through the mail. Nothing can keep them apart - except their own illusions.

In 1905 25-year-old Emma Howe travels alone from Vermont to Washington State to meet, and perhaps to marry, pioneer farmer Arthur Smollett. Her family is naturally unhappy since she has known Smollett only through a brief correspondence, but Emma is determined to get away from the home where she feels she is becoming an embittered spinster. When Emma and Arthur finally meet they decide they have made a dreadful mistake, but gradually each begins to see the other's good points.
