Accidents and danger threaten the coyote family even in the den. The curious pups learn about the hazards of gila monsters, scorpions and other deadly insects. A single pup survives the vicious attack of gray wolves which range out of Mexico's Sierra Madres and cause havoc on ranches and throughout the wildlife community. The youn pup tries to make his own way but finds no hospitality among the javelina herd and coati mundi clans when he instinctively seeks companionship.
Delgato, an old Apache, returned to his birthplace to spend his remaining years alone, saves the coyote's life after the pup eats some of the poisonous jimson weed. Both find a treasured companionship as they explore the country to learn the secrets of such animals as kangaroo rats, bears and ring-tailed cats. Later, believing Little Blue desires a life with his own kind, the Apache reluctantly forces him back to a wilderness existence, only to be saved from death himself when the pup intervenes during a wolf attack.
The relationship of old Delgato and Little Blue is a tender one-two lonely creatures finding a special understanding.« less
