I enjoyed this book. The story of Cranford and its spinster residents is charming and funny. Elizabeth Gaskell evokes the Victorian era, with all its rules of fashion, food and manners, very well. It's a sweet story. As for 'Cousin Phillis', it's a sweetly sad love story, with characters so well-drawn, you really feel as if you knew them all along. These aren't stories of great romance, mystery, intrigue, or societal upheaval, or even just beach-read fluff, but they're a nice little break from those sorts of stories, and to me, sort of like a 'palate-cleanser', when you're just tired of reading the same old stuff.
