Crook's Hollow is the kind of village where everyone knows everyone else and some residents bear more influence than others. The Loxleys and Crooks are two such families and they don't particularly like each other. It is therefore the Crooks that Thor Loxley first thinks of when he is nearly killed one night by a masked person driving a piece of farm machinery. While Thor tries to determine who might want to kill him, he learns that the Town Council is considering allowing developers to build 1500 houses in a portion of Crook's Hollow, including land owned by both the Crooks and Loxleys. The developer launches into an aggressive sales pitch and even goes so far as to issue Thor a check for the amount they would offer him. It isn't until a subsequent attempt on Thor's life that he realizes these attempts may be connected to the proposed real estate deal.

âCrook's Hollowâ by Robert Parker is a stand-alone book set in a small English village. Parker himself lives in England, so this book gives a pretty authentic view of life in the English countryside. He's created both a cast of characters and a plot that is entirely believable. Parker is also the author of the Ben Bracken series, of which there are two so far. Based on âCrook's Hollow,â I see a bright future as an author for Parker and give this book 4/5 stars.
