Does anyone know any great books on Cross Stitch. I'm just starting out and I'd love some pointers.

Not specific books for pointers, etc. but here's a GREAT online resource for all things cross-stitch:
http://home.comcast.net/~kathydyer/

Here's a few books that I have or had at one time when I was an active needleworker:

http://www.amazon.com/Cross-Stitchers-Bible-Jane-Greenoff/dp/071531470X/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-5078780-0537669?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181400828&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.com/Needleworkers-Companion-Shay-Pendray/dp/1931499071/ref=sr_1_1/002-5078780-0537669?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181400886&sr=8-1

And if you ever want to progress beyond making x-es on aida cloth and do fanny stitches on linen, I highly recommend Eileen Bennett books (Notebook of Sampler Stitches I and II).

For the most part, Kathy Dyer's site as given above and the rec.crafts.textiles.needlework group is the best source of information that I've found outside of going into a cross-stitch dedicated shop. :)

Heather, I belong to a couple of  cross stitch Yahoo groups. I'm not very active now, but I have found a lot of good info in the past. They also have good links and tutorials and I'm sure you could find some useful stuff there if you join. Here are the links

I have been at it for about two years.  Look at second hand stores and garage sales.  You can pick up books and entire kits for a song.

Hey, I also have a few books that I haven't posted yet but I would be happy to send you a PM before I post them. Just let me know if you need them or not. I've been cross0stiching off and on for about 10 years and just about 2 years ago I became "serious" about it.

Sam -

I haven't been to Stitching Festival since it was called CATS.  Enjoyed it the first couple years, but the last year I went was rather disappointing to me.  Still, a group of my friends from NYC go (and take over the lobby of the lodge) so there's a possibility I might go for an overnight just to see them. :)

Saving my money for beadfest in August. :)

How serious are you about your new hobby?  I did it for a few years then arthritis got to my hands and I have trouble holding the needle for any period of time.  You wouldn't believe the yarn, books, frames, etc that I have.  Let me know if you are interested in any of it.  I won't write titles unless you reply.  Judith

Judith, I would be interested!  What do you like that I could send you in return?

Would anyone be interested in trading book credits for cross-stitch aida? I sell Charles Craft aida on ebay, so I have tons of it and would be willing to work out a trade for PBS credits, if anyone is interested. Just let me know.

I sell 60 inch wide fabric by the yard ---(36"x60") pieces. I'm thinking 3 credits per yard? If you would like to see my auctions to get an idea of the fabrics I have, here is my MEpage:  members.ebay.com/aboutme/ritarene

Here's a list of colors I can trade:  14ct: light blue, blueridge, wheatstraw, smoke tone, navy blue, delft blue (36"x60")  18ct: off-white, beige, navy blue  (36"x60") 11ct: white (36"x50" -- 11 count isn't quite as wide as the 14 & 18 counts --perfect for tree skirts!)

I can do multiple yards of a color, too, for your really large projects. Send me a PM!

Thanks! Rita.

I don't usually spend much time in the discussion forums but it has been cold the last few days here today and I've about gotten cabin fever doing my two favorite things--stitching and reading. There are books and more books of varying use giving instructions on stitching. I've found few beyond the general introductions that are of a great deal of use. Mostly, you just have to get a simple pattern and then dive in. Here is a link that is comprehensive and also has a few amusing stories. http://home.comcast.net/~kathydyer/index.html Good luck--keep at it and one day you'll be hooked!

I've been cross-stitching on and off for over 30 years. I haven't done anything for about 2 years and need to make time to get back into it. I have sooo many threads and patterns. If anyone is looking for a particular pattern, send me a PM. Maybe we can work out a pattern or book swap.

I have cross stitched for 24 years and love it. I have three sons and they are not interested in learning. I would love to find someone in my area to teach this wonderful craft to, I am in southeast Ohio. Also I have posted several books and I am planning on sending a extra book with each book ordered. After awhile they tend to pile up on you. If anyone is interested in these books just type cross stitch in the search box. If you are from the area and want to learn the craft please let me know. Thanks, Cindy

If there's a trade that I could work out with someone for DMC floss, I would be interested.  I came across a deal awhile back for a massive amount of floss and there's no way I will ever use it all.  Most of what I have is in the 3000-series.
