For those who just discovered Crowner John, I'd recommend that you read this earlier in the series than it's place as the 15th book, but be sure to read a couple of the titles to get a feel for the characters.

Enjoyed this back history, but it lacked the edginess of some of the character interactions and rivalries that exist between John, Matilda and her brother Richard.

I feel some sorrow that I've finished this series, as I found it greatly entertaining, to the point where I had a hard time putting down the books.

The first part of this "prequel" wasn't very good. Perhaps it was because I already knew much about the capture and ransom of Richard I (the "Lionhearted"). I found that part drawn-out and boring. Richard I was never my favorite British king, if I even have one. If I do, then it has to be George VI, as he is one I can actually admire. If you feel as I do then you can comfortably skip "Part One" of this novel and start the book with "Part Two" on page 79.

Part Two is much more entertaining showing how Sir John became interested in solving crimes, but some of the "groundwork" for several main characters was just a repeat of information you will find in the series.
