Maybe I've been spoiled by reading those breathless-but-not-entirely-accurate history books written lately. This was hard to read. The author quite often uses "the former" and "the latter" and it takes me too long to find which reference he is talking about. The maps are OK, but there are so many place names that it's hard to keep track of the places (not to mention the names).
