I've always heard great things about Messner's writing and about his very personal and deeply thoughtful style of climbing. This book takes you along and also into his mind as he does a solo ascent of Everest. It's full of information but also reflective of his unique dedication to 'doing his own thing.' His connection to the terrain and native peoples comes through clearly. It's among the best descriptions of events. But better yet, I found it a unique look into the mind and motivation of a climber. The pictures alone are worth getting the book. I can't recommend it highly enough!
